Gwinnett County jail located in Lawrenceville, Georgia is a minimum-security jail that was constructed and opened in 2002. The jail was named after Button Gwinnett who was one of three people from Georgia to sign the Declaration of Independence. The county was founded on December 15, 1818, from landed granted to the State of Georgia by the Creek Indians. The very first jail in the county was a one room holding area located adjacent to the home of Elisha Winn. Court proceedings were held in the barn of the Elisha Winn home. Sometime between 1818-1820, the first jail was erected just south of the courthouse square. Built by John Cupp, the jail consisted of a two-story log home. In recent years, the newest county jail was built in 1991 due to overcrowding and replaced the previous jail that had been used since 1974. Then in 2006, Gwinnett County Jail opened Wimberly Tower. An addition to the jail that doubled its housing capacity. This recent addition was slated to be just one of many expansions. Gwinnett County is the second most populous county in the state of Georgia.

The jail contains eight open dormitories and houses inmates either waiting for trial or has been sentenced to a year or less in jail. With the new additions, the maximum capacity is around 2,600 inmates. Other inmates who will have longer sentences will be moved to other facilities. There are programs available for inmates during their stay such as earning their equivalency diploma or participating in the Gwinnett Jail Dogs Program which allows inmates to care for dogs and get them ready for adoption. In September of 2018, Netflix aired a documentary called First & Last. The series was filmed at the Gwinnett County jail and followed twelve people detained at the jail through their time being incarcerated there.

The jail offers church services for those who want to attend. Inmates also have access to an outside recreational yard as well as common areas where they can watch TV and partake in other activities or groups. There are set days and times for inmates to receive visitations and they have access to telephone calls, mail, and commissary. The jail is run by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department.
