History Of The Prison Building
When the Lake County Detention Center was established it was primarily made to stop smugglers from coming in and out of the country. The Lake County Detention Center was not one of the first established in the state of Florida. In fact, the first prison was built in 1868 in Chattahoochee, in order to stop the drug abuse that was abundant in the area. The crime rate was at an all-time high before the prisons were established. The correctional facilities expressed that most of the inmates would be released back to the public around 2013, therefore they needed to establish more buildings in Florida to secure the public safety. Therefore, the state decided that detention centers were also just as effective, thus creating the Lake County Detention Center. It was built to hold nine hundred and sixty beds. They chose the location of Tavares, Florida because it was close to other prison built in the area. The average population of the building consists of seven hundred and forty-seven booked daily inmates. Because of the prison, reports show that the crime rate dropped around fifty-two percent within the period of 1991 to 2010. During the year, 2016, there were 8722 inmates that were recorded and booked into the center. With reports showing numbers like these, the detention center has taken a toll and has requested additional financial help from the state to increase security for future use. There are around two hundred and sixty employees in the center. In 2015, the center was re accredited from the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission.
