The jail is maintained and operated by officers at Tallahassee Police department. Florida Capitol Police Jail is mainly used to temporarily hold new detainees before moving them to nearest county Jail. Usually it houses inmate for short period of time but in some cases it can also house inmates serving less than a year jail term. Most of the inmates are convicted for misdemeanor offenses like driving under the influence, fighting/assault etc. It provides basic amenities to the inmates like bathroom facility and 3 meals daily. Sometimes detainees from nearby municipality or county are also housed in Florida Capitol Police Jail.
