The Pueblo County Jail and Detention Center has a mixed male and female prisoner population and is located in central Pueblo, Colorado, a city of around 111,000 people around 42 miles from Colorado Springs.
The jail houses inmates serving time for both felonies and misdemeanors, or awaiting judication, and has been in the news for its overcrowded inmate population, said to be over 150 percent of its intended population.
Triple bunking within the prison is the norm.
According to the Pueblo Chieftain, a local Pueblo newspaper, the prison is both aged, has sewage problems, and has been overcrowded for several years. A tax increase was recently on the ballot to fund a new detention facility, according to Public Commissioner Garrison Ortiz. Pueblo County Jail.
Visitation of Prisoners can be made in one of two ways, either by a home or office computer over the internet or in person at the jail.
Jail visits in person are allowed from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. but must be registered for, 24 hours in advance, either through a private video companies website or through arrangements at the jail lobby. Onsite visits are limited to three times per week.
Video visits made me made more frequently, but there is a charge, and you must have
high-speed internet, and a computer equipped with both a camera as well as a microphone. There is also an app available for video visits.
Inmates may not receive phone calls except for attorneys or investigators, but inmates may make collect phone calls or use pre-paid phone card minutes. Except for attorneys, all phone calls are monitored, so local defense attorney's advise inmates not to discuss anything that could be incriminating over the telephone.
The detention center has a commissary from which inmates can purchase snacks, food and hygiene items. Friends or family members can fun an inmates commissary account, either with direct payments online, or bringing cash or money orders directly to the jail.
