Denver County Jail, located in Denver CO is a medium security jail operated by the Denver Sheriff’s Department. The jail was opened in 1956 but was not fully completed until 2012. The city and county of Denver were only established in the year 1902. Ninety percent of the original buildings have been demolished to develop and build new construction. The new building 24, spans 100,572 feet and is seven stories tall. The newest addition to the jail accommodates 256 beds in addition to control rooms, exercise yards, and day rooms. There are also separate housing units for female inmates. In 2003, voters approved $378 million dollars to upgrade the cities criminal justice facilities. These new expansions were designed to house inmate capacity until 2035.
The original county jail was built in 1890. There were several riots and escape attempts made during its 66-year history. One notable escape was made by four men who actually sawed through jail bars to make their escape. The original jail was closed in 1956 and the new jail was built immediately after, and this building was completely demolished in 1963.
The Denver County Jail system houses 2,200 inmates at capacity between the county jail and the Denver City Detention Center. The jail is used for long term custody of prisoners who are serving up to a year in jail for misdemeanor crimes. The jail also houses prisoners awaiting to be transferred after sentencing for felony crimes to the Colorado Department of Corrections. The Denver County Jail does not house inmates for sentences longer than twelve months. The average stay for most inmates is 44 days.
The jail is utilizing new programs to address mental health like Yoga and meditation. Inmates are assessed by medical professionals upon arrival to determine what if any mental health programs may be suitable for them. They offer work release programs as well to prepare inmates for life on the outside of jail walls. These programs help inmates to integrate smoothly back into society. They also offer a High School Equivalency Course so inmates can earn their GED while incarcerated.
