History Of The Prison Building
DeQueen, Arkansas has a long history built around the area. It originally started to flourish when Sevier County was established in 1828. Back in that period, the county was more populated and larger than we know of it today. In 1896 the Kansas City Pittsburgh and Gulf Railroad was built through the county, giving it extra means of travel and growth. DeQueen was formally known in 1897 as an official county and residence for many people because of the railroad and the amounts of trees and resources that were available. However, in 1899, a large fire took out most of the county and devastated many businesses and hurt families. In 1930 the county courthouse was rebuilt as well as a few additions to help with inmates. The original jailhouse was made to hold inmates at the back of the courthouse, however, it was small, and after the fire burned it down, the county saw it as a chance to remake the building and the jail. It cost the county around $25 thousand dollars. The jail can house around 75 beds and has an immaculate security system. They offer many different types of programs for their inmates to help them during the time spent in the location.
