The Pinal County Jail operates under the management and supervision of the Pinal County Sheriff.
The Pinal County Jail is the third largest County Jail in the state of Arizona, having a rated capacity of 1,503. This places the Pinal County Jail into the Large Jail Category as defined by the National Institute of Corrections.
The existing Jail was opened April 1st, 1996, with a bed capacity of 472. Due to the explosive population growth within Pinal County it became necessary to expand the County Jail once again. In July 2006 a 1031 bed expansion was opened. This expansion provides the appropriate conditions of confinement for the increased inmate population.
The Pinal County Jail was selected as a pilot site by the Nationals Sheriffs’ Association for Jail Operations for Accreditation. The accreditation is governed by legal based standards established through case law. The Pinal County Jail received its first accreditation in June 2011 and was reaccredited December 2013 receiving a “Level 1” rating which is the highest score possible. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Jail is the first Arizona Jail to receive their National Accreditation.
The Pinal County Jail confines individuals who have been arrested, charged with criminal offenses and are awaiting disposition of their cases within the criminal justice system. The Jail also houses those individuals who have been sentenced to serve their respective sentence in the county jail.
