The Talladega County Jail has a mission to securely detain offenders to protect the staff, other inmates, and the citizens of Talladega County. This facility is primarily used as a pre-trial detention facility, where inmates are kept that are waiting to appear before the court. The Talladega County Jail is still in the original location where its operations began in 1993. However, the jail has since expanded significantly to keep up with the inmate capacity. In 2011 using the design-build concept the jail was expanded and this was the first time that this prison had used this concept. The new construction and renovations were funded completely by outside sources and the citizens of Talladega County never saw an increase in taxes.
One major event that occurred in 2000 was the complaint from the Plaintiff, that his constitutional rights were being violated while incarcerated at the Talladega County Jail. His claim was that several guards failed to protect him when other inmates lead an assault on the Plaintiff. This is an extremely serious manner and even though prisoners may have broken the law, they are all still entitled to some of their constitutional rights. This is a common issue in many other prison institutions, and this is a very serious manner. The federal prison nearby in Talladega County actually experienced a prison riot. Some Cuban inmates lead a riot and caused major chaos.
The ever-growing crim in Talladega County and in the rest of Alabama forced the Talladega County Jail to expand. The Talladega County Jail is a fairly large facility, especially when it was expanded in 2011. It is fair that a prison facility would use a design-build method to launch its new construction. The design-build concept is when the construction is orchestrated by a single entity. Most prison facilities will use multiple companies and resources to orchestrate the construction of an expansion. The Talladega County Jail is one of the more historic facility, considering it is still in its original location. Talladega County Sheriff's Department made an excellent decision to keep the historic value of the prison and to expand on its original location.
