The Jacksonville City Jail in Alabama is a correction facility that houses inmates who are awaiting trial or sentencing for a term of less than one year. The jail houses inmates who are termed miscreants. State prisons and Federal prisons house inmates who have committed crimes that are punished with sentences of more than one year. The Jacksonville Jail is a city jail that serves the town of Jacksonville. The original Jacksonville Jail was a brick building. The building was built in 1840 by the first jailer of Jacksonville, Fielding Snow. The present Jacksonville City Jail is a modern building with all modern security measures. Porches were added to the old city jail and it was sold as a residential building.

Local police departments run the Jacksonville City Jail. It also houses the operations center of the Jacksonville Police Department. The security in the jail is tight and it is designated as a medium correctional facility. Inmates are placed in the jail on charges of drunkenness or high. Offenders arrested for fights and assault are also placed here. Mentally ill inmates are also placed here if the police cannot find another facility to place them. Inmates remain for a day or a few days until they get bail or if the court acquits them. Inmates remain in their cells except when they are allowed to eat, watch television or play games.
