Founded in 2010 in San Diego, California by Joey Rocco and Kris Kibak, Instant Checkmate has rapidly become one of the most popular background checking sites on the internet. The company is affiliated with the Better Business Bureau and has a rating of A+. Despite this high rating, the company does suffer from a high number of negative reviews on its BBB profile.

Instant Checkmate's background checks are not suitable for the purposes of employment, lending or tenant screening as the company is not compliant with the Federal Credit Reporting Act. This means their reports are more suited to doing basic background checks on potential dating partners or business partners or for finding people you've lost contact with.

The reports themselves tend to be fairly accurate and in the survey carried out ranked highly for accuracy and comprehensive data retrieval. As usual, three subjects were selected for reports and the results checked by these individuals for accuracy. The amount of data returned by Instant Checkmate was relatively high and, for the most part accurate, although they did miss the current phone numbers and email addresses of some. For others though, the company actually returned the most complete data with nothing missing. As we have noted before, some companies have trouble finding details of marriages, but Instant Checkmate managed to find accurate information in this area for all three of our subjects, although spouses were sometimes listed under associates. All the usual information you would expect from a decent background check was there, such as date of birth, address, phone numbers, email addresses, marriage and divorce details, criminal record checks, court judgments, bankruptcies, real estate records, other legal information, social media accounts and employment history. Reports are easily readable and are set out in a timeline meaning you can readily access the information you need. Refining your search through the use of middle names, cities or states will greatly reduce the amount of non-relevant information provided. The company has a mobile app for Android.

The pricing structure is similar to other companies operating in this field. A monthly subscription with Instant Checkmate costs $34.78 which means you have access to multiple reports for a similar price to single reports from other providers. Individual reports cannot be purchased from the company. There is the option of a three-month unlimited report package for $27.82 per month, but note that you will be billed upfront for the entire three-month period, costing you $83.47. Please also be aware that the company will automatically charge you every month until you actively cancel your subscription. There is an additional cost of $2.99 to download a report. Premium reports will cost you an extra $19.99.

Instant Checkmate has received quite a lot of negative feedback and most of this stems from billing. The company's website does not go out of its way to make the pricing structure clearly available. Running a person's name through a search will provide the information on cost but the only other way to find out is to access the Terms of Use through the footer on the website.

There is a 24/7 customer service telephone hotline but this is not always readily available. They can be contacted also via email. Most customer complaints seem to revolve around billing issues and the lack of clear information in the general website is obviously one of the major reasons for this and is something all potential customers should be aware of.
